Connecting to the Breath

When in a state of emotional upheaval, many times people will tell you to take a deep breath.  Why is this important?  What does taking that deep breath do?  It helps to calm you down, but why?  Connecting your awareness to your breath has a direct line of communication to the brain. It signals the pre-frontal cortex to let you know that you are okay, which then in turn signals blood pressure, heart rate, and muscle tension to settle down. If steps are not taken to help the brain recognize your present state of safety, emotions can escalate rather quickly, leading to physical manifestations such as increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and increased muscle tension.  These are all related to survival instincts.

We all have the ability to intercept this progression through conscious awareness.  Bringing attention to the breath repeatedly, such as in meditation, can help to keep that line of calm communication open to the brain reducing the impact of stress.  A single deep breath can have an impact, imagine what a cultivated practice of breath meditation can potentially do long-term to help?
